Windows NTBackup

LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service replaces your traditional backup software. However, you can run Windows NTBackup on the same computer as LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service. If you choose to run both applications, you need to exclude the Windows NTBackup catalogs from the LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service backup to avoid unnecessarily high data change rates and excessive use of network bandwidth.

The default directory path for NTBackup in Windows 2000/2003 is:

Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\Catalogs

NTBackup process specified in LiveVault built-in setting

The NTBackup process ntbackup.exe modifies a file's properties during its backup. When LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service recognizes that the file properties are changed, it will determine that the file was changed and will back up the file changes. This results in unnecessarily high continuous backup activity which will negatively impact your computer operations.

To prevent this problem, LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service Agent version 3.6 (for Windows 2000) and version 4.0 (for Windows 2000, 2003 and NT 4.0) automatically include this process in a LiveVault built-in setting that enables the LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service replication technology to identify the files whose properties are modified by these processes, and thus avoid replicating the files unnecessarily. LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service will continue to identify when the file content has actually changed and back it up appropriately.

If you are running an earlier Agent version, contact Customer Service for assistance.
