Microsoft Indexing Service

To avoid unnecessarily high data change rates and excessive use of network bandwidth for a computer that is running both the Microsoft Indexing Service and LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service, you need to do both of the following:

  • Exclude the LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service journals and internal databases from the Indexing Service catalog.

  • Exclude the Indexing Service catalogs from LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service backup.

Excluding the LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service journals and internal databases

Exclude these following LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service directories from the Indexing Service catalog:

  • Journal files directory

  • Unprotected database files directory

Otherwise, the Indexing Service catalog will contain LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service internal use and temporary files.

LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service Agent version 4.0 and later automatically exclude these LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service from the Indexing Service catalog if these directories are located on NTFS volumes. If you are running an earlier Agent version, or if these directories are located on FAT volumes, you must manually exclude these directories.

To identify the LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service directories paths

To identify the full path of the directories to exclude on your computer:

  1. Using REGEDT32.EXE, open the registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\LiveVault Corporation\LiveVault\2.0

  2. Locate the JournalRoot value (for example, this is usually similar to E:\LiveVault\Journals)

  3. Locate the UnprotectedDatasetDirectory value (for example, this is usually similar to E:\LiveVault\Databases\Unprotected)

To exclude the directories from the catalog

  1. On the computer running the Indexing Service, right-click My Computer and click Manage.

  2. In the console tree, expand Services and Applications.

  3. Click Indexing Service.

  4. Under the appropriate catalog, for example, System, click Directories.

  5. On the Action menu, point to New, and then click Directory.

  6. In the Add Directory dialog box, click the Browse button and browse to the journals directory (as shown in the registry), and select it.

The selected path is displayed in the Path box.

  7. In the Include in Index? group click No to exclude the directory from the catalog.

  8. Click OK to add this directory.

  9. Repeat steps 5 through 8 to exclude the LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service unprotected database directory.

To exclude the Indexing Service catalogs from backup

LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service Agent version 4.0 and later automatically excludes the Indexing Service catalogs from backup (up to a maximum of five catalogs). If you are running an earlier Agent version, you must manually create all the exclusions. If you have more than five Indexing Service catalogs, contact Customer Service.

The Indexing Service catalog paths are specified in the registry key:

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\ContentIndex\Catalogs in each subkey's value Location

For each of the catalogs, append \CATALOG.WCI\* to the specified path in the Location value. For example, if the registry key has the subkey Web whose Location value is C:\inetpub, then append \CATALOG.WCI\* to create the following exclusion:

Exclude C:\inetpub\CATALOG.WCI\* (plus subdirectories)

In the tree view on the Files to Backup tab, you will see the icon for the automatically excluded directory and subdirectories. Parent directories of the automatically excluded directories are marked in MyLiveVault with one of the "partially excluded" icons, either (if a parent directory is selected), or (if a parent directory is not selected).
