Veritas Backup Exec
LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service replaces your traditional backup software.
However, you can run VERITAS Backup Exec for NT (version 7.2 or newer) on the same computer
as LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service. If you choose to run both applications, you must perform
the additional configuration specified in this topic.
If you are using a different version of Backup Exec,
contact Customer
Service for assistance.
Add Backup Exec processes to LiveVault "suspect process" registry setting
Some Backup Exec processes modify a file's properties during its backup. For
example, when Backup Exec backs up a file during a Normal or Incremental backup, it
clears the Archive bit to indicate that the file was backed up.
When this bit is cleared on a file, the LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service will determine that the file was
changed and will back up the file changes. This results in unnecessarily high
continuous backup activity which will negatively impact your computer operations.
To prevent this problem, the Backup Exec process that is responsible for updating the archive bit (beremote.exe)
must be part of a LiveVault "suspect
process" registry setting that enables the LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service replication technology to identify that the process is merely updating the
archive bit (not actually changing the file), and thus avoid replicating the
files unnecessarily. In addition, the
process bengine.exe
also must be part of the registry setting. LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service
Agent version 4.0 and later automatically includes beremote.exe in the LiveVault
registry setting, and Agent version
3.3.1 and later includes
bengine.exe. LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service will continue to identify when the file content
has actually changed and back it up appropriately.
If you are running an earlier Agent version, contact Customer Service for assistance.
Excluding Backup Exec catalogs, internal data, and SNMP notifications
To avoid unnecessarily high data
change rates and excessive use of network bandwidth, the Backup Exec
catalogs, internal data, and SNMP notifications must be excluded from the LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service backups.
LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service Agent version 4.0
and later automatically excludes the catalogs and internal data. If you are running an earlier
Agent version, you must manually create these exclusions. For all Agent
versions, you must manually exclude the SNMP notifications file.
In the tree view on the Files to Backup tab, you
will see the icon for the
automatically excluded directories. Parent
directories of the automatically excluded directories are marked in
MyLiveVault with one of the "partially excluded" icons, either
(if a parent directory is selected), or
(if a parent directory is not selected).

Exclude C:\Program Files\VERITAS\Backup Exec\NT\Catalogs\*
Backup
Exec internal data
The Backup Exec internal data
directory path is specified in the registry key:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\VERITAS\Backup Exec\Engine\Misc value Data Path
For example, if the internal data

C:\Program Files\VERITAS\Backup Exec\NT\Data\*
SNMP notifications file
The default path is:
C:\Program Files\VERITAS\Backup Exec\NT\besnmp.trc
