CA BrightStor ARCserve

LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service replaces your traditional backup software. However, you can run CA BrightStor ARCserve on the same computer as LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service. If you choose to run both applications, you must perform the additional configuration specified in this topic.

Note: You can also run an earlier version of ARCserve on the same computer as LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service. However, it is important to inform Customer Service of the version of ARCserve you are running, as the process names and directories may have changed between versions.

Add ARCserve processes to LiveVault "suspect process" registry setting

Some ARCserve agent processes modify a file's properties during its backup. When LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service recognizes that the file properties are changed, it will determine that the file was changed and will back up the file changes. This results in unnecessarily high continuous backup activity which will negatively impact your computer operations.

To prevent this problem, the ARCserve agent processes (CaRunJob.exe and UnivAgent.exe, or ASRUNJOB.EXE for earlier ARCserve versions) must be part of a LiveVault "suspect process" registry setting that enables the LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service replication technology to identify the files whose properties are modified by these processes, and thus avoid replicating the files unnecessarily. LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service Agent version 4.0 automatically includes these processes in the LiveVault registry setting. LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service will continue to identify when the file content has actually changed and back it up appropriately.

If you are running an earlier Agent version, contact Customer Service for assistance.

Excluding ARCserve job queue and temporary files

To avoid unnecessarily high data change rates and excessive use of network bandwidth, the ARCserve job queue directory and temporary files directory and their subdirectories must be excluded from LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service backup.

Note: The following information applies to BrightStor ARCserve. If you are running an earlier version of ARCserve, inform Customer Service so they can assist in identifying the directories to be excluded.

LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service Agent version 4.0 and later automatically exclude the BrightStor ARCserve job queue and temporary files directories and their subdirectories. If you are running an earlier Agent version, or an earlier ARCserve version, you must manually create these exclusions.

In the tree view on the Files to Backup tab, you will see the icon for the automatically excluded directories and subdirectories. Parent directories of the automatically excluded directories are marked in MyLiveVault with one of the "partially excluded" icons, either (if a parent directory is selected), or (if a parent directory is not selected).

  • ARCserve job queue directory

The ARCserve job queue directory is located in the ARCserve home directory which is specified in the registry key:

    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Brightstor Arcserve Backup\Base\Path value HOME

For example, if the home directory is C:\Program Files\CA\BrightStor ArcServe Backup, create the exclusion:

    Exclude C:\Program Files\CA\BrightStor ArcServe Backup\00000001.QSD\* (plus subdirectories)

  • ARCserve temporary directory

The ARCserve temporary directory path is specified in the registry key:

    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Brightstor Arcserve Backup\Base\Path value TEMP

For example, if the temporary directory is C:\Program Files\CA\BrightStor ArcServe Backup\Temp, create the following exclusion:

    Exclude C:\Program Files\CA\BrightStor ArcServe Backup\Temp\* (plus subdirectories)

Computer Associates anti-virus exclusions

You also need to exclude the Computer Associates anti-virus scan engine logs and incoming directory from LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service backup.

LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service Agent version 4.0 and later automatically excludes these directories and their subdirectories. If you are running an earlier Agent version, you must manually create these exclusions.

  • Scan engine logs

The logs path is specified in the registry key:

    HKLM\SOFTWARE\ComputerAssociates\ScanEngine\Path value Logs

For example, if the specified path is C:\Program Files\CA\common\scanengine\logs, create the exclusion:

    Exclude C:\Program Files\CA\common\scanengine\logs\* (plus subdirectories)

  • Incoming directory

The incoming directory path is specified in the registry key:

    HKLM\SOFTWARE\ComputerAssociates\ScanEngine\Path value Incoming

For example, if the specified path is C:\Program Files\CA\common\scanengine\incoming, create the exclusion:

    Exclude C:\Program Files\CA\common\scanengine\incoming\* (plus subdirectories)
