Use the following guidelines when configuring your AMS AfW database server backup using LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service.

Configuring AfW backup

To configure back up of an AfW database server:

  1. Configure the Files and Directories backup configuration to back up the entire AfW database server:

    • Select all volumes, directories, and files. This includes the operating system, SQL server and AfW program files.

Note: By default, the entire computer is selected for backup.

If you choose not to back up the entire computer, then you should minimally select the following AfW directories, including their subdirectories.

      • X:\AGENA\AFWSHARE\* (plus subdirectories)

      • X:\AGENA\AFWPGM\* (plus subdirectories)

      • X:\AFWUTIL\* (plus subdirectories)

The AFWSHARE and AFWPGM directories are usually located in the \AGENA directory, and the AFWUTIL directory is usually located in the root volume. However, they may be in different locations (for example, all located in the root volume). In some installations they may be located on different volumes or on different servers. Volumes are shown as X in the paths above. See the AfW Solution 13484 for information about how to locate your AfW directories. To access the AMS AfW Support site, go to www.ams-support.com.

Important: We strongly recommend that you back up your entire computer. If you choose not to back up the entire computer, you will not be able to perform a disaster recovery using LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service. However, after rebuilding and reinstalling your computer, you will be able to restore the AfW program files that you had backed up (as specified above), as well as your AfW database (backed up on its own database backup configuration).

    • Exclude the msg.log file. This file contains the output from the Database Consistency check on the AfW database (which is run by the AMS Backup Utilities each night when no users are online). This file is replaced each night and does not need to be restored.

The path for this file is commonly:

      C:\afwutil\msg.log

    • Select the box to back up the Windows registry/System State. If you do not back it up, you will not be able to perform a disaster recovery, and you may not be able to restore your databases or applications.

Note: By default, the registry/System State is backed up as part of your Files and Directories backup configuration.

    • If you are also using Veritas Backup Exec to back up the AfW database server, refer to Veritas Backup Exec for additional configuration requirements.

    • If you are running other software applications on the database server, you should contact your vendor for information about which other directories need to be backed up.

    • We generally recommend setting your schedule to continuous backup, 24x7, so your changes are always being backed up. However, you can set any schedule you desire.

  2. Create a separate database backup configuration for the AfW database:

    • Select the directories containing the AfW database files, including subdirectories:

      • In a default installation of SQL Server 2000 this is usually:

        X:\MSSQL\DATA\*

      • In a default installation of SQL Server 7.0 versions this is usually:

        X:\MSSQL7\DATA\*

Note: These directories may span multiple volumes (with volumes shown as X in the paths above). See the AfW Solution 9650 for information about how to verify your database locations. To access the AMS AfW Support site, go to www.ams-support.com.

Upgrading SQL Server on the AfW database server

When you upgrade to SQL Server 2000 from SQL Server 7.0 on the AfW database server, the location for the SQL data changes and AfW will put your data in the new path. However, the AfW database backup configuration will not be automatically updated with the new SQL paths. You must manually update the AfW database backup configuration.

The AfW database file directories are usually:

  • In a default installation of SQL Server 2000:

    X:\MSSQL\DATA\*

  • In a default installation of SQL Server 7.0 versions:

    X:\MSSQL7\DATA\*

Note: The AfW database directories may span multiple volumes (with volumes shown as X in the paths above). See the AfW Solution 9650 for information about how to verify your database locations. To access the AMS AfW Support site, go to www.ams-support.com.
