Manually Defining Backup File Selection Rules

In general, you should browse and select the files to back up using the tree view in the Files to Backup tab on the Computer Backup form. As you select files and directories, MyLiveVault generates file selection rules.

You can, however, define file selection rules on the Files to Backup tab. You can also view and modify rules that are generated from your selections in the tree view.

To manually define file selection rules

  1. In the Files to Backup tab on the Computer Backup form, click Advanced to expand the form. This displays all existing file selection rules for this backup configuration.

  2. Define the file selection rules, following the appropriate steps for the actions you want to perform:

    To... Do this...
    Add a new rule   
    1. Define the rule information.

    2. Click New.

    The new rule is added to the list.

    Modify an existing rule
    1. Click the existing rule in the list. The rule information appears in the fields on the form.

    2. Modify the rule information.

    3. Click Edit.

    The revised rule is displayed in the list.

    Create a new rule based on an existing rule   
    1. Click the existing rule in the list. The rule information appears in the fields on the form.

    2. Modify the rule information.

    3. Click New.

    The new rule is displayed in the list. The existing rule is not changed.

    Delete a rule
    1. Click the rule in the list.

    2. Click Delete.

    The rule is removed from the list.

    Delete all existing rules
    1. Click Clear All.

    2. When prompted to confirm the clear request, click OK.

    All the rules are removed from the list.

    Order the rules Order the rules so they progress from the most general to the most specific; the rule order affects how files are qualified for backup.
    1. Click a rule in the list.

    2. Click Move Up or Move Down as needed to reposition the rule.

    3. Repeat steps a. and b. for each rule as necessary.
