Modifying a Microsoft Exchange Backup Configuration

This procedure applies to LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service Agent version 4.0 or later. If you are running an earlier Agent version, see Modifying a Microsoft Exchange Backup Configuration (for version 3.6 or earlier).

The process for modifying backup of Microsoft Exchange varies based on the current configuration and what you want to do:

  • Modify your existing Exchange backup configuration. The backup configuration option determines what you can modify:

    • Automatic Exchange backup configuration (either data only or full server): You can modify the schedule or review the Exchange application option parameters.

    • Custom Exchange backup configuration: You can modify the file selections, or change the schedule, or review the Exchange application option parameters.

  • Switch the Exchange backup configuration option (for example, if you currently have a custom Exchange backup configuration, you can switch to an automatic Exchange backup configuration).

  • Create the first Exchange backup configuration for this computer (for example, if you have added Exchange to the computer after configuring initial backup).

Important: If you have upgraded from Agent version 3.6 or earlier, and you have an existing Exchange backup configuration, then the existing configuration is a custom Exchange backup configuration.

If you are running  Exchange Server on this computer, LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service automatically detects that Exchange is installed on the computer, identifies the version, and can automatically generate and maintain special database backup configurations to protect the full Exchange server (that is, the entire computer) or the Exchange data only. LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service then determines the correct set of Exchange files and directories to back up to ensure the application data is accurately protected. If you specify that you want to automatically back up the entire Exchange server, LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service also sets up your Files and Directories backup configuration to back up the entire computer, including the Windows System State/registry. You can then set a schedule indicating when the automatic backup configurations should run.

Optionally, you can instead specify that you want to define your own custom Exchange backup configuration. To define this custom configuration, you specify the Exchange files and directories to back up, and set a schedule indicating when Exchange should be backed up.

Important: If you are defining your own custom Exchange backup configuration, follow the guidelines in the appropriate procedure for your Exchange version:

To modify the existing Exchange backup configuration

Follow these steps to modify your existing Exchange backup configuration.

  1. On the MyLiveVault Home page, the All Computers form lists all the computers on your company account. Click Backup/Restore in the Action column for the computer whose  Exchange backup configuration you want to modify.

  2. On the Computer Information form, click the Backup tab.

  3. In the Backup Configuration section, click Edit.

  4. On the Microsoft Exchange Backup form on the Change Configuration page, click Edit.

Note: Your current Exchange backup configuration option is selected in this form. Do not change it.

  5. The files and directories currently selected to be backed up or excluded from backup by this configuration are shown in the Files to Backup tab on the Computer Backup form.

    • If the configuration option is either Automatic Exchange Data backup only or Automatic entire Exchange Server backup, on the Files to Backup tab click View Files to Backup to review the Exchange files and directories that are being backed up.

Note: You cannot edit the Exchange files and directories selections for an automatic Exchange backup configuration.

    • If you chose Custom Exchange Data backup, on the Files to Backup tab specify the Exchange files and directories to back up. You can use either of these methods:

  6. The current schedule for the Exchange backup configuration is displayed on the Schedule tab. You can modify this schedule.

  7. In the Options tab, you can review and modify (if applicable) the Exchange application options for your Exchange version (for example, circular logging, or mailbox and message retention).

  8. When you are done modifying the backup configuration, click Save.

  9. Review the information in the Computer Backup form's Properties and Specifications columns

Note: If the configuration option is Automatic entire Exchange Server backup, you will review information for both the Exchange and the Files and Directories backup configurations.

  10. Do one of the following:

    • Click Submit to accept the modified backup configuration.

    • Click Back to make additional changes to the configuration.

    • Click Cancel if you do not want to modify the configuration.

  11. At the bottom of the Change Configuration page (not in a form), click Done.

If you modified the file selections for a custom backup configuration, LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service stops the backup for this configuration and restarts it using the new file selections. Because the file selections changed, the computer will be in an initial synchronization state again in which only the files selected for the first time will be backed up in full (that is, files that were previously selected are not backed up in full again). When the initial synchronization completes, the primary technical contact will be notified by e-mail.

If you modified the schedule or application options these changes are implemented as soon as possible.

To switch the Exchange backup configuration option or create the first Exchange backup configuration

The steps for switching the Exchange backup configuration option (for example, from custom to automatic) or creating the first Exchange backup configuration are essentially the same.

  4. On the Microsoft Exchange Backup form on the Change Configuration page, select the option specifying how you want to back up Exchange on the computer:

    • Select Automatic Exchange Data backup only to have LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service automatically generate and maintain back up for Exchange on this computer.

    • Select Automatic entire Exchange Server backup to have LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service automatically generate and maintain back up for this entire computer. An Exchange backup configuration and the Files and Directories backup configuration for this computer will be generated for you.

Note: In general we recommend choosing this option as it is the most efficient and easy method to ensure your computer is fully backed up and recoverable.

    • Select Custom Exchange Data backup to define your own custom Exchange backup configuration.

Note: If you have an existing Exchange backup configuration, your current Exchange backup configuration option is selected by default in this form.

  5. When prompted to confirm that you want to either switch your existing Exchange backup configuration to the selected configuration option or create the selected configuration, click OK.

Note: If you have an existing Exchange backup configuration, it is replaced based on your selection. If you selected Automatic entire Exchange Server backup, both the existing Exchange backup configuration (if applicable) and the Files and Directories backup configuration are replaced.

  6. The files and directories selected to be backed up by this configuration are shown in the Files to Backup tab on the Computer Backup form.

    • If you chose either Automatic Exchange Data backup only or Automatic entire Exchange Server backup, on the Files to Backup tab click View Files to Backup to review the Exchange files and directories that will be backed up.

Note: You cannot edit the Exchange files and directories selections for an automatic Exchange backup configuration.

    • If you chose Custom Exchange Data backup, on the Files to Backup tab specify the Exchange files and directories to back up. You can use either of these methods:

  7. In the Schedule tab, create a schedule for the backup configuration.

Note: If you chose Automatic entire Exchange Server backup, the same schedule applies to both your Exchange and your Files and Directories backup configurations.

  8. In the Options tab, review and edit (if applicable) the Exchange application options for your Exchange version (for example, circular logging, or mailbox and message retention).

  9. When you are done configuring the backup configuration, click Save.

  10. Review the information in the Computer Backup form's Properties and Specifications columns

Note: If the configuration option is Automatic entire Exchange Server backup, you will review information for both the Exchange and the Files and Directories backup configurations.

  11. Do one of the following:

    • Click Submit to accept the new backup configuration.

    • Click Back to make additional changes to the configuration.

    • Click Cancel if you do not want to switch to the configuration.

  12. At the bottom of the Change Configuration page (not in a form), click Done.

If applicable, LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service stops the backup for the prior configurations (Exchange, and Files and Directories if automatically backing up the full server). Then it starts backup using the new backup configurations. The computer will be in an initial synchronization state again in which only the files selected for the first time will be backed up in full (that is, files that were selected on prior backup configurations are not backed up in full again). When the initial synchronization completes, the primary technical contact will be notified by e-mail.
